The skin condition Vitiligo can have a significant impact on teenagers and kids. The white patches that are characteristic of the disorder can be very noticeable, and can lead to social isolation, low self-esteem, and other problems.
Kids with vitiligo often have to deal with stares and comments from classmates and others. I know, I experienced them. This can be very tough, especially for younger kids who are still developing their self-identity. Some teens may feel like they don't fit in with other people, and this can lead to depression and other emotional problems.
There is no cure for vitiligo, but there are treatments that can help lessen its effects. If you are are affected by vitiligo should talk to your parents or a doctor about what treatments might work best. Know that there is also research underway on new treatments for vitiligo, so hopefully there will be more options available in the future.
In the meantime, it's important for kids and teens with vitiligo to know that they are not alone. There are many others who are dealing with this condition, and they can find support from other people who understand what they're going through. I found it helpful to go online and read forums about vitiligo, help with my knowledge to others and learn A LOT from them.
